Our Aim
Many of you might wonder, why was Project H2OSafe initiated?
Well,here are the reasons!
In Singapore, there have been quite a few newspaper articles recently reporting the unfortunate deaths of victims who had drowned in pools, mainly children. We felt that these deaths could have been prevented,as most of these drowning cases had taken place because these children were not supervised carefully,or did not practise basic water safety measures such as warm-up exercises. Therefore,in order to reduce these mortality rates,we have come up with many solutions and a complete action plan, which you can view in our "Updates" page.
Right now,in the year 2008,we aim to raise water safety levels by ensuring that all pools are audited within the end of this year, and also raise awareness through printing attractive posters and signs. Therefore,we hope that YOU,our valued reader, would be able to spread the message of the importance of water safety to all your friends and family,so that we can help to reduce the frequency of drowning cases together!
Background Information
[all statistics were taken from SLSS,]
The drowning cases have progressively increased since 1998.In 1998,the number of rescues were approximately 74,however,in 2007,the number of rescues had drastically incresed to 255.
This means that a lot more people had almost drowned in the recent years, with the highest number of 300 rescues in 2005.This alarming number of casualties requires urgent attention, and this is part of the reason why Project
H2OSafe was initiated.
We researched on the general water safety dangers that might have contributed to the deaths of these victims, and we found out that the slippery tiles near the pools posed an imminent danger. Also, the sudden increase in height
in the pool itself, where the pool suddenly becomes deeper without warning, also posed another danger to swimmers. These dangers might have caused the deaths of the drowning victims.
Water safety measures that are already implemented:
1)Surveillance camera invented by an NTU student which specially detects any body that is stationary for a few seconds, and alerts the lifeguards that the person might be drowning. This is to help lifeguards to more effectively
pinpoint swimmers that might need help.
Possible measures that can be implemented are:
1)To make a clear marking and indication that the water height has increased, and ensure that it is clearly visible to swimmers.
2)Audit all pools to ensure that it is safe for swimmers to swim in
3)Adult supervision at all times if children are swimming in the pool
4)Basic warm-up exercises before entering the pool
5)Warning signs that inform the swimmers of possible dangers such as slippery tiles, and warn them to be careful
